Baltimore's historic Senator Theatre, a grand old movie palace unlike any for hundreds and possibly thousands of miles in any direction, may be sold at auction for back mortgage payments unless enough money can be raised before next Wednesday, February 21st. I stood in line at this theatre for the opening shows all of the Special Editions and the Prequels, and there's no better place for a movie opening-night event. A couple years ago, this theatre made Entertainment Weekly's list of the top 10 movie theatres in the US. It is known to be one of George Lucas' favorite theatres, and John Waters always premieres his movies there (well, now that he's respectable and all). There's been lively discussion on some other boards about how a business should be able to support itself by doing the business it's in, but it's worth it to me to donate some money to keep a theatre I like around, rather that see it turned into a chain-operated multiplex, or a shoe store, or a strip club, or bulldozed to build condos. Check it all out here: www.senator.com/
