Having painted your cars, you know even a vague concept before putting any paint down is not a bad thing.
Start your concept thread now! Let's see where you think you're going with it.
I photoshopped several notions, but never locked myself down to them.
Looking thru this thread at early pictures, I'm shocked I drove around looking like I did. I always saw the car as it is now, but that was a serious delusion on my part! I knew no one else could have seen it like it is now. Now, I can't see it either!
As it turns out, the new wing stripes were a design i dismissed on paper, but now like much more in person.
Owning the car, I'm not worried about screwing up simply because I know I can paint over mistakes. If someone was paying me to paint their car, I'd be much more panic-ridden.
As to prepping the surface, my old mechanic back East told me years ago all I really needed to do was go over the body with a green scrub pad and a good wash down. Sandpaper was overkill he said. But I'm pulling paint up to as you saw in the recent video. I think it is likely road tar/oil build up along the runners.
On this car, I accidentally found that a hair dryer will take the factory paint right off nice and clean in big strips. I used the dryer to take the hyundai logos off, but also found it pulled paint real nice too. Had I known that, I might have taken the whole body down to bare metal. That's the 'proper way'. Prime the bare metal with self-etching primer and paint on that.
I went from the green scrub pad to self-etch, then layers of regular primer combined with regular enamel paint. I also take the car to the wash and go over it with the big brush before each painting.
Another wash or two and I'll never 'need' to take it to the car wash ever again!
I might take it to Maaco for a clear matte sealer when done. Still haven't decided. I was quoted $150 at Earl Schieb last Fall.
I think the next round is in late June and should be either the front/rear or more likely it's a round of airbrushing. Still looking to glue shapes on the body.
A new idea is getting those non-spinning hubcaps and put the death star on one, yavin on another, then either DS2 and Endor, or even screen grabs of other ships. It would knock the concept over the top I think.
